About Erin

Erin Askew is a painter originally from Toronto, Canada, now residing in the mountains of Northern California. She holds a BFA with honors in Studio from the University of Western Ontario. Erin has worked as a graphic designer and creative director for large international brands for the past 20 years. After a long hiatus from fine art, she has returned with renewed passion, a fresh perspective, and more to say.

Drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources—other artists, music, podcasts, books, social and political issues, her environment, and emotions—Erin combines these influences into a style that suits her mood. Her work focuses primarily on feminist themes characterized by a bold and risky palette, expressive and vivid brushstrokes, and an emotional depth. She uses a variety of materials, from acrylic to charcoal, oil pastel, and spray paint, to bring her vision to life.

Erin’s began her career began with wearable art that discussed feminism and examined the negativity surrounding the word. Appropriately named, she constructed a fashion label called “FYou Couture” and put on a fashion show during the exhibit, featuring thought-provoking pieces that spoke to the double standards women face.

Artist Statement

My work delves into feminism, weaving together its historical narratives and contemporary realities. It serves as both a deeply personal exploration and a broader commentary. Some pieces reflect my own journey, grappling with everyday challenges like work-life balance, marriage, health, and the ongoing fight for equality. Others draw upon historical metaphors and imagery to critically examine the state of feminism today. Through this dual lens, my art seeks to spark reflection, inspire dialogue, and contribute to the ever-evolving conversation on gender and justice.
